The technology has advanced drastically since the black & white film days but during the 1920s and 1930s, the world of filmmaking saw remarkable improvements in the art of special effects.

They used techniques like the Schüfftan process and borrowed inspiration from the theatre and creative tricks of still photography like double exposure and matt compositing.
